Description

Developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum is a holistic approach that educates and assesses the success of the whole child. Teachers learn how to create individualized curriculum focused on children's interest, based on assessments, monitoring children periodically, with the goal to reach the age-appropriate levels of development. This training Introduces the basics of the early childhood curriculum: foundations (theory & research), guidance strategies, physical environment and schedules, weekly planning for groups and individuals, documentation and the developmental continuum, and an overview of online assessment and sharing tools, including the Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies Gold, EasyFolios, and more.

Training Agenda

9:00 Sign-in, coffee/tea and muffins

9:30 Foundations of the Curriculum
Brief overview of the foundations of the early childhood curriculum: early learning and child development theory and research and the developmental continuum; compare to your center’s or personal teaching mission.

10:30 Positive Guidance Strategies
Trusting relationships, focusing on self-regulation, “Big Rule / Little Rule”, positive language, responding to challenging behavior

11:30 Break (15 minutes)

11:45 The Physical Environment and Schedules
Areas for routines and experiences, safety guidelines, sending positive messages (“you belong”); schedules for infants, toddlers & twos, and preschool-PreK

12:30 Lunch Break (30 minutes): Bring your lunch; drinks & cookies provided.

1:00 Individual and Group Planning
Routines, environment, weekly individual vs. group planning, child-directed/emergent curriculum, planning for assessment

2:00 Documentation and the Developmental Continuum
Collecting group/individual documentation, organizing assessment data for reporting and curriculum planning, presenting documentation and assessment at family conferences

2:30 Assessment Systems
An overview of various online and paper resources and services available for documentation, assessment and sharing with families, including EasyFolio, Creative Curriculum & Teaching Strategies and other online portfolio systems.
