How to Register: Child Care Resources

Come learn about what makes board books right for babies, how to read them, how to choose them, how to acquire funding for purchasing and how to borrow from libraries (for teachers and families). We’ll talk about your favorite book, and you’ll choose a new one to try out – take it to your classroom and return it to the library later. You also have an opportunity to do a bonus homework hour (optional but free!): Introduce new book to your classroom and write a memo to parents on what the kids liked best and how the parents could use the book at home.

Training Agenda

9:00 Class Overview & Instructions
Information about handout packet and PowerPoint presentation, agenda, introduction to instructors & participants.

9:15 Introductions/Icebreaker
Draw & write something that represents your favorite page of your favorite board book. Post all and share with the large group.

9:50 Topic 1: What is literacy for babies & toddlers?
Lecture & discussion on what about books & reading are valuable for infants. Select 1 of the books provided, explain in 1 sentence for each factor regarding how this book meets the criteria.

10:15 Topic 2: How to read board books
Lecture & demonstration on how to read board books to babies. Get into pairs: read books to each other using the methods above, discuss how it is to be read to in that way – pairs then large group share.

10:45 Topic 3: Choosing a book
Read and choose a new book to use with the kids in your care. Explain how you will read it and why you think it is valuable – specifically to “your” kids.

11:00 Topic 4: Resources
Handout with resources for teachers and families. First independent writing, then large group discussion: Answer (1) What do you want to add to your class & how will you pay for it or access the library (etc.)? (2) What will you tell parents about first? Students leave with a plan of action.

11:30 Class Review/ Wrap-Up
One thing you notice about your favorite page of your favorite book in relationship to what you have learned today? Complete evaluations

11:45 Discuss Additional Extended Learning or Follow-Up
Option to complete FREE STARS hour homework: Introduce new book to your classroom and write a memo to parents on what the kids liked best and how the parents could use the book at home.
