Using visual art creation as an example, you will learn and practice a way to invite children to engage in dialog about what they are doing and what is driving them: their intention, emotions, understanding about the world. Speaking in descriptions and authentic personal responses, we allow children the freedom to respond or not, and to reveal what is personally meaningful. This non-judgmental, non-demanding language supports activities in all domains, including social/behavior development. After learning the guidelines and discussing examples, you will take turns practicing this talk while the other engages in visual art creation. Printed handouts packets are provided.
1. Explain the benefits of communicating without questions or judgments (from information from presenter and participant experience during the session).
2. Come up with phrases that fit the rules of this communication style.
